Fellowships and Awards
A Teacher's Guide to Fellowships and Awards both presents alternatives to traditional inservice training for pre-kindergarten through grade twelve teachers and supports and celebrates the professional development of those who work with young people. The awards recognize and honor teaching excellence, innovative classroom practice, and exceptional leadership. The guide is intended to help teachers find a combination of educational and personal experiences that contribute to increased competence and satisfaction. In addition, it provides a rich array of opportunities from which Massachusetts teachers may draw when designing their individual professional development plans for recertification.
This Guide contains a total of 141 institutes, fellowships, and awards. The entries are organized by discipline or topic, and many of the entries include the name of past participants/recipients who have indicated an interest in sharing information. The institutes are either free, scholarship-assisted, or offer a stipend to participants. Most of the programs are offered each year, although the application dates and contacts for application information may change.

The Foundation is focused primarily on supporting work of a challenging and often experimental nature, while noting that the interpretation of those terms may vary from place to place and culture to culture. In this regard the Foundation encourages curatorial research leading to new scholarship in the field of contemporary art. The Foundation is committed to the precept that the arts are essential to an open, enlightened democracy. It therefore seeks to advance an inclusive cultural dialogue by providing resources to organizations that support artists reflecting a diverse society and by affirming that freedom of artistic expression is fundamental to such a society and must be vigorously protected. (See Arts, Culture and Society ) To advance these values, grants are awarded to not-for-profit organizations in the United States and occasionally abroad under specific Guidelines.

The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) was founded in 1981 as a nonprofit arts organization. Its mission is to identify emerging artists and assist them at critical junctures in their educational and professional developments, and to raise appreciation for, and support of, the arts in American society. Each year thousands of talented high school seniors and other 17- and 18-year-old artists apply to the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts' Arts Recognition and Talent Search ® (ARTS) program. Simply applying provides the opportunity to qualify for $3 million in college scholarships; share in an award package valued up to $800,000 and perhaps be named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. In all, almost 10% of all the ARTS program applicants receive some kind of award or recognition for their talent. The ARTS program, one of several NFAA programs available to artists developing their careers, identifies promising 17- and 18-year-old artists in the categories of Dance, Jazz, Film and Video, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice, and Writing for scholarships and financial support toward their continued arts education. As a result of participating in the ARTS program, approximately 400 artists receive direct cash awards. Others are noted for their excellence through Merit Awards. More specifically, from the thousands of ARTS applicants, 125 of the most accomplished artists are chosen to participate in the final adjudication process known as ARTS Week, a series of performances, master classes, seminars and readings held each January in Miami, Florida. These 125 ARTS awardees invited to attend ARTS Week have the opportunity to earn cash awards of up to $3,000 each and be named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
